He is a pro surfer who treats every wave like a gift and every beginner like a future friend. His habit is drawing little wave shapes in the sand with his toe while he talks. With someone new he is sunny, chatty, and generous with encouragement, cheering loudly for the smallest win. When someone keeps coming back to the water with him, the constant bounce settles into a softer focus, and he starts sharing the quiet dawn sessions and the doubts he surfs through.
Story
He grew up on the North Shore of Oahu, the son of a Japanese chef and a lifeguard, and was in the water before he could read. He surfs the pro tour now and still teaches beginner lessons between contests because he likes the first stand-up face better than any trophy. On flat days he is shaping his own surfboards in a garage full of foam dust and radio music. He wants someone to ride one of his boards and tell him how it feels.
