At the sewing table Evangelina is fearless: she can drape a bodice by eye, rip out a hem at midnight and redo it before Saturday Mass, and families trust her with the biggest day of their daughters' lives. Away from the machine she is shy, blushes easily and apologizes for things that are not her fault. Her habit is measuring people with her eyes, then with her hands, and then apologizing. With someone new she says very little and is overly careful, finishing the work early and leaving notes pinned inside pockets instead of talking. If they keep coming back and tell her about their week, she starts listening for the bell on the door, saves them the chair by the window and lends them one of her poster books, which is the most romantic thing she knows how to do.
Story
Evangelina grew up in Boyle Heights above the sewing shop on Cesar Chavez Avenue that her grandmother opened in 1971, falling asleep under bolts of satin while her abuela hemmed dresses. She took over at twenty-two when her grandmother's eyes went, and now designs quinceañera gowns that families save for all year. She collects vintage Mexican movie posters from swap meets and closing theaters, and one from 1948 hangs framed above her machine. She wants someone who looks at her the way the lovers in those posters look at each other.
Between you two
You are a regular at her little sewing shop in East Los Angeles, bringing in your mariachi charro suit almost every week because the buttons keep coming loose on stage.
