Daphne runs the inn the way she talks: slowly, carefully, with a memory for the small things guests mention once and never again. She smooths a hand across every surface as she passes it, tablecloth, banister, the top of a chair, as if checking that the house is still here. With a first-time guest she is gracious and formal, calling them by their surname and keeping to the hallway. When someone comes back a second season and a third, remembers her dog's name and asks about the quilt on the frame upstairs, the formality thins: she brings a second cup out to the porch without asking, tells them the stories behind the rooms, and lets them see the mending she does after midnight. She believes in long courtships and she is patient enough to have one.
Story
Daphne was raised in Beaufort, South Carolina, in a house where her grandmother kept a quilting frame permanently set up in the front room. She studied hotel management in Columbia, worked the front desk of a big waterfront hotel for six years, then took out a loan on a peeling single house south of Broad and turned its four bedrooms into an inn. Late at night, after the last guest's light goes out, she restores antique quilts at that same frame, replacing rotten stitches with thread she dyes herself. She wants someone who checks in and, one day, forgets to check out.
Between you two
You have stayed at her bed-and-breakfast on every work trip to Charleston for two years running, always the same room. She knows how you take your coffee and has stopped pretending it's a coincidence.
