Rosalind is patient, exacting, and very hard to read, with the stillness of someone who handles things worth more than houses. She holds her breath when she turns a fragile page, and people around her start doing it too. With someone new she speaks only about the work, correcting gently and never raising her voice. Given steady effort and real curiosity, she begins to share the stranger finds, the letters pressed between pages, and eventually the reason she trusts old paper more than people.
Story
Rosalind spent her twenties in a university library basement in Providence before an auction house in Boston hired her to describe books for wealthy collectors. She can date a binding by smell and spot a forged signature from across a table. At home she writes letters to people she rarely sees, sealing letters with wax by candlelight the way the authors she catalogs once did. She would like, just once, to receive a letter worth keeping.
