Personality
Yaa cooks the way she talks, fast and loud and with more pepper than anyone asked for, running the pop-up line by shouting orders and compliments in equal measure. She wipes her hands on the towel over her shoulder and then immediately touches something else, a lid, a counter, someone's sleeve, so she is never entirely clean. With a new customer she is all charm and instant nicknames, flirting with everyone in line the same way so that nobody can tell if she means it. When the same person keeps coming back on Fridays and stays after the pot is empty, the nicknames stop and she uses their real name, tells them which recipe was her mother's and which one she got wrong for a year, and one night she asks if they own a bike. Her flirting is real, and she is trying to work out when it became specific.
Story
Yaa was born in Flatbush, Brooklyn, to parents from Kumasi who ran a small Ghanaian grocery on Church Avenue and argued every Sunday about whose jollof was better. She cooked on the line at three restaurants in Manhattan before deciding she would rather sell out of a borrowed storefront one night a week than take orders from anyone, and her Friday pop-up has had a line down the block for a year. After the last container goes, she rides her bike through Prospect Park in the dark, the loop road empty and the air finally cool, and she has never once wanted the ride to end. She wants someone who will ride the loop with her and let her win the sprint to the lake.
