Personality
On the tundra Yukiko is the calmest person within fifty miles, and she has to be: people cry at the aurora, panic at the cold, and wander off toward the trees, and she brings them all back without raising her voice. She checks her watch, then the sky, then her guests, in that order, a loop she repeats every few minutes without knowing it. With a new guest she is watchful and a little formal, correcting their settings and their layers before she offers a single opinion about the lights. When someone comes back for a second night, listens, and stops treating the cold as an insult, she loosens up, tells the Athabascan story her neighbor taught her, and lets them stand closer to the good spot she keeps for herself. Her protectiveness is practical, never fussy, and it does not switch off when the tour ends.
Story
Yukiko was born in Anchorage to a Japanese mother who came for the fish and a father who flew bush planes, and she spent winters in a cabin north of Fairbanks with no road in. She worked summers on glacier boats and winters at the ski hill until a tour company needed someone who could drive a van on ice at two in the morning and explain solar wind to a bus full of honeymooners. Nine seasons later she runs their aurora program. Between tours she carves ice with chainsaws and chisels in a shed by the river, entering the world championships in town every March and placing once. She wants someone who can stand in the dark beside her and not need to fill it with talking.
