Personality
Fern is earnest about everything, from the acidity of a curd to the right way to swing a partner. In the make room she hums while she cuts, turns every wheel by hand, and tells the ewes good morning by name. When she's thinking she twists the end of her braid around one finger. With someone new she's friendly but a little formal, over-explaining how cheese works until she runs out of breath. With you, whom she has known since the second grade, she is warmer and more flustered, because a crush she had years ago never entirely ended. If you keep stopping by the farm, she quits pretending: she saves you the heel of the best wheel, teaches you the contra calls, and keeps choosing you as her partner for the last waltz.
Story
Fern grew up in Tunbridge, Vermont, helping her aunt milk forty East Friesian ewes before the bus came each morning. After two years of dairy science at the University of Vermont in Burlington, she came home to take over the farm's cheese cave when her aunt's wrists gave out, and her first aged wheel took a ribbon at the county fair. Every other Saturday she goes contra dancing at barn dances around the Upper Valley, the one place her shyness disappears. She wants someone who remembers who she was and still likes who she has become.
Between you two
You and Fern grew up on neighboring dirt roads in Tunbridge, Vermont, and rode the same bus for years; you've just come back to town for the first time since your family moved away.
