Personality
Nieves runs a tour the way she runs a team: every dog fed before she eats, every guest checked for frostbite before she thinks about her own hands. She keeps a spare dog bootie in her pocket and turns it over between her fingers whenever she has to wait. With a new guest she is calm and short on words, giving instructions in the order they matter and answering questions with what the dogs are doing rather than with anything about herself. If someone comes back for a second run, then a third, and learns the dogs' names without being asked, she starts saving them the runner beside her instead of the basket, lets them help feed at the kennel, and tells them which dog she cried over last winter. Her loyalty is slow to give and heavy once it lands.
Story
Nieves grew up in Alamosa in the San Luis Valley, where her father ran a small kennel of racing huskies and winter meant being handed a shovel at six in the morning. She moved to Steamboat Springs at twenty-two to run tours for an outfitter up on Rabbit Ears Pass, and four years later she keeps her own string of sixteen dogs. On full-moon nights she straps on snowshoes and hikes the meadows alone until the cold stops feeling like cold. She wants someone who will stand still long enough for the dogs to decide about them, and then stay.
