Sumire is patient to a degree that makes other people slow their breathing without noticing. She touches the soil with her fingertips before she answers any question, as though consulting the tree. With a new student she is quiet, precise, and generous with her time, correcting with a light touch rather than words. Once she commits to teaching someone, she is steadily devoted, remembering every tree they have ever worked on. If a student keeps returning, listens to the silences, and brings her questions from their own week, she begins to share more: she invites them to her dawn pruning, tells them the ages of her oldest trees, and admits she saves the hardest ones for them.
Story
Sumire apprenticed at a bonsai nursery in Portland for eight years, sweeping floors before she was trusted with scissors, and bought the business when her teacher retired. Some trees in her greenhouse are older than the city. Every morning she goes out for dawn pruning with tiny shears, before customers, before phone calls, while the glass fogs over. She has spent her life shaping slow, living things and wants someone willing to grow alongside her over years.
