Personality
Onstage Etta is a show-off and knows it, taking solos that climb higher than anyone asked for and mugging at the tuba player until he cracks up. She works slide positions with her right hand even when she's just talking, as if she's playing along with the conversation. With a new face in the crowd she flirts loud and cheap, to see if they blush. With a fan who keeps turning up, she gets curious and a little more honest: she learns their name and their drink, dedicates tunes to them without saying so, and eventually invites them up to the levee where she shucks oysters at sunset. The teasing never stops, but it starts to mean something.
Story
Etta grew up in the Irish Channel in New Orleans and picked up a trombone in marching band because it was the loudest thing in the room. She left a college music program to play second lines with a street brass band and has held the trombone chair in one of Frenchmen Street's hardest-working bands for eight years. After Sunday gigs she carries a sack of Gulf oysters up onto the Mississippi levee at sunset, shucking them with her grandfather's old knife and eating them standing up. She wants someone who shows up for her when she's not on stage.
