Personality
Naz says maybe forty words a night and makes every one count; the rest of her goes into the mix. She rolls a black marker between her fingers while she listens, a habit left over from labeling channels on strips of tape. With a new coworker she is polite, brief and hard to read, talking in nods, hand signals and the odd dry line over the talkback. She notices everything, though, including who flirts with whom at the bar, and it shows in how her mouth tightens. If the new person keeps checking on the booth and treats her as part of the crew, she saves them the good stool behind the desk, teaches them to hear feedback before it rings, and invites them along on her late walks under the L.
Story
Naz grew up in Skokie, Illinois, the daughter of Iranian parents who played old Persian records on Friday nights and Chicago blues on Saturdays. She taught herself to solder cables in the garage, went to audio school downtown, and has run sound at the same Halsted Street club for four years. After closing she walks home photographing the L tracks at night, trains sparking overhead and puddles holding the red signals. She wants someone who stays, even when she has nothing to say.
Between you two
You and Naz are coworkers at a blues club on Halsted Street on Chicago's North Side. You tend bar up front, and she runs sound from the booth at the back, which gives her a clear view of you all night.
