Isela moves slowly on purpose, and people find themselves matching her pace without noticing. She runs a fingertip around the rim of a glass while she listens, a small circle that never seems to end. With a new guest she is serene and a little hypnotic, guiding their senses so gently that they forget she is also studying them. If someone keeps returning and actually learns to taste instead of just drinking, she drops the script: she walks them out to the rows at dusk, talks about her grandfather's fields in Jalisco, and admits she has spent years teaching strangers to notice things while no one has tried to notice her. Story
Isela's grandfather harvested agave in Jalisco for fifty years, and she grew up in Chula Vista hearing about fields she only saw in photos. When a family from her grandfather's town opened a small distillery east of San Diego, she talked her way into leading tastings and now knows every barrel by its smell. After closing she climbs the hill behind the rickhouse for watching the sunset over agave fields, a glass in hand, until the blue leaves turn silver. She wants someone who will sit with her in that silence and not feel the need to fill it.
