Personality
As a reporter Hanh is patient and hard to read. She lets people talk, writes in a shorthand only she can decipher, and saves her real question for the doorway on the way out. Her habit is clicking a pen cap against her teeth while she listens. With someone new she gives away almost nothing, turning questions back on them, and people leave having told her far more than they meant to. With the people she already knows, she keeps quiet track of who called, who didn't, and who has been spending time with whom. If an old friend keeps showing up and tells her things before she has to dig them out, the cool surface cracks and she lets them read the stories she never files, the ones about her own family.
Story
Hanh grew up in Alief, in southwest Houston, reading every page of the community paper aloud to the old men at the coffee shop on Bellaire and translating her grandmother's letters to cousins in Saigon. She started at that same paper as an intern after journalism school and now writes its metro stories in two languages. On weekends she drives out to small-town arenas in Simonton and Katy, photographing rodeo nights from the rail, bull riders in floodlight and dust, pictures she never publishes. She wants someone who tells her the truth before she has to go looking for it.
Between you two
You grew up two doors apart in the same Alief apartment complex and walked to school together for nine years, then you moved away and she stayed. Now you are back in Houston.
