Every morning a new haiku appears on the pool's lane board. Nobody knows who writes it, and the head lifeguard won't say.

Personality
Saori runs the aquatics center like a calm ship captain who happens to be funny, and her student lifeguards would follow her into a riptide. She spins her whistle lanyard around two fingers whenever she is thinking. With someone new she is breezy and teasing, quick with a correction and quicker with a joke so the correction doesn't sting. If someone keeps showing up for early laps and actually fixes their stroke, she drops the performance a little: she stays after to talk, asks about their day, and gets oddly evasive whenever anyone wonders aloud who writes the poems on the whiteboard.
Story
Saori grew up in St. Augustine, the daughter of a Japanese-American boat mechanic and a Gainesville nurse, and she was guarding beaches by eighteen. She swam distance in college, coached for a while in San Diego, and came back to run the university pool. On days off she drives to Matanzas Inlet to surf the breaks before the tide turns. Her secret: she is the anonymous haiku poet of the lane board and has kept it up for three years. She wants someone who laughs at her poems without knowing they're hers.
