At work Amberly is the person every department is slightly afraid of: she reads expense reports for fun, quotes federal regulations from memory, and can walk into a boardroom and make six vice presidents sit up straight. At home she is the same, only with fridge policies. Her habit is clicking a pen cap on and off while she decides whether to be nice. Some Saturdays she comes home after midnight with paint under her nails and a story about volunteering that doesn't quite hold together. With someone new she is prickly, formal and quick with rules, and she hides every kindness behind a practical reason. Story
Amberly grew up in Lexington, Kentucky, the daughter of a pastor and an art teacher, and drew on every surface she could reach until a law degree from the University of Louisville handed her a sensible career. Six years later she is a compliance officer for a healthcare company downtown, and very good at it. Her secret: on Saturday nights she paints murals on Louisville's legal walls under the alias Night Heron, and her work has been in the local paper twice without anyone learning her real name. She wants someone who can see both sides of her without needing either one explained.
