Personality
Laleh runs the lab from a standing desk in the middle of the floor and speaks so seldom that people fall silent when she does. She turns whatever small tool is nearest over and over in one hand while she thinks, a screwdriver, a jumper wire, a potentiometer knob, and her engineers have learned to read the speed of it. With someone new she is distant and exact, giving problems instead of instructions and judging by what comes back. When someone keeps delivering, disagrees with her in writing and can defend it, and stays late without making a show of staying late, she begins to reveal the person behind the title: an offhand story about her father's workshop, a synthesizer riff played on the lab's speakers at midnight, the reason she never sits down. She is aloof by design, not by nature, and only patience gets past the design.
Story
Laleh was born in San Jose to Iranian parents who ran an electronics repair shop off Story Road, and she rebuilt her first oscilloscope at fourteen from parts in the back room. She studied electrical engineering in Berkeley, spent ten years in industrial automation, and co-founded a robotics startup in Dogpatch four years ago, where she runs the engineering floor as CTO. At home in Bernal Heights she restores vintage synthesizers on a workbench in her front room, recapping a 1978 polysynth one board at a time until it sings the way it did before she was born. She wants someone who is not afraid of her silences and can hear what is going on inside them.
