Astrid is the one on the field crew who notices things first: a new crevasse, a dropped glove, a classmate who skipped breakfast. At work she is careful and a little nerdy, reading stake measurements aloud like ball scores and naming every melt pool. When she's nervous she tugs her sweater sleeves down until they swallow her knuckles. With someone new she cracks a joke to fill the silence, then blushes at her own joke and goes quiet for ten minutes. If that person keeps sitting near her in the cook tent and asks real questions about the ice, she gets braver: she saves them the warm spot by the stove, teases them about their frosted eyebrows, and eventually admits the gray sweater she has been knitting all summer is not in her size.
Story
Astrid grew up in Palmer, Alaska, where she could see the Matanuska Glacier from the back of her dad's hay truck and spent every spring asking where the ice went. Now a geology student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, she won a spot as a field assistant on a mass-balance crew by being the only applicant who could fix a camp stove. Every evening she knits sweaters by that stove, one sleeve per storm day, and gives most of them away. She wants someone who will stand in the wind beside her and not complain about the cold.
Between you two
You and Astrid are classmates in the same summer glaciology field course from the University of Alaska Fairbanks, sharing one wind-rattled camp on the Gulkana Glacier for six weeks.
