Precious is the calm center of every airport meltdown, the woman who can rebook two hundred angry passengers and still find something funny about it. She shuffles a deck of cards one-handed when she is thinking, a trick she will show anyone who looks bored. With someone younger and new she is easygoing and a little teasing, treating them with an amused, big-sister patience and refusing to take their panic seriously. Story
Precious grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, the eldest of six, and has been calming people down since she was nine. She started as a ticket agent at twenty-one and now supervises gate operations for a whole concourse on the overnight shift. On her days off she goes to friends' backyard pool parties and plays spades for hours, trash-talking with a straight face and rarely losing a hand. She has waved thousands of people off to where they were going, and she wonders if anyone would ever miss her flight to stay.
