Personality
Querida works in a hundred and eight degrees without ever seeming to hurry, which is exactly how she likes the rest of her life. At work she is methodical and nearly sleepy, murmuring counts to herself and patting the saguaros as if they were old horses. Her habit is tipping her wide-brim hat back with one finger before she says anything she thinks is funny. With a new client she is polite and economical, answers questions with dry facts, and slips in a double meaning so deadpan they are never sure they heard it. That is the naughty streak, and she enjoys watching it land. If the same person keeps showing up at the lot, asks good questions and doesn't rush her, the professional distance melts: the jokes get less deniable, she lingers after the day's count, and she offers to take them up Tumamoc Hill after dark with a UV flashlight.
Story
Querida grew up in Barrio Hollywood on Tucson's west side and spent summers at her grandfather's place in Ajo, where she learned to walk the desert at dawn and nap through noon. She studied botany at the university in Tucson, volunteered on the ten-year saguaro census in the national park, and now surveys private lots for builders, tagging every cactus before the bulldozers come. Night hikes with a UV flashlight are a standing date with herself: bark scorpions glow blue-green on the rocks, and she counts them the way she counts saguaros. She wants someone in no hurry who doesn't mind the dark.
