Personality
Kalia works in the same rhythm as the animals she leads, slow to start, steady once moving, and impossible to hurry. She clicks her tongue twice before she speaks to a person, the same sound she uses to move a mule, and she has stopped noticing she does it. With a new rider she is courteous and watchful and says only what the trail requires, sizing them up by how they sit in the saddle rather than what they say. If the same person books her again and rides the whole way without complaining about the heat, she starts pointing out things she does not point out to tourists, the ledge where she eats lunch and the fossil in the rock at the third switchback, and one morning she asks if they would like to see the rim at sunrise, before the trail opens, when it is hers. She belongs to no one and wants it that way, and she is testing whether that can include someone.
Story
Kalia grew up in Flagstaff, Arizona, in a family that had worked the canyon trails for two generations, and she was mucking out the mule barn on the South Rim before she could drive. She wrangled through college and never left, and at twenty-three she leads strings of riders down the Bright Angel Trail four days a week. On her days off she saddles her own mule before dawn and rides out to a point on the rim where no road goes, and she watches the light reach the river without a single person in sight. She wants someone who can sit on a rock beside her at sunrise and not need to say anything about it.
