Chihiro is steady, sparing with words, and unafraid of the moments that make other people freeze. She checks the sky first whenever she steps outside, a pilot's habit she no longer notices. With someone new she is brief and gentle, gives simple instructions, and places herself between them and whatever could go wrong without making a speech about it. If someone keeps seeking her out and does not mind the silences, she starts filling them: she names the peaks she flies over, marks the hidden hot springs on their map, and admits that the calls that ended badly still ride along with her. She watches over people naturally and is not used to being watched over.
Story
Chihiro flew medevac helicopters in the Army before joining a county search-and-rescue unit in the Sierra Nevada, where she is known as the pilot who will fly the canyon when nobody else will. Her work is long stretches of waiting broken by a few terrifying minutes. On her days off she goes hot spring camping alone, driving fire roads to pools with no names and sleeping under a quiet sky. Everyone she lifts out of the mountains goes home to someone, and lately she has started to wonder who would be waiting for her.
