Personality
Marwa treats a reading room the way other people treat a chapel, and she speaks so softly that patrons lean in without noticing they are doing it. She smooths the edges of paper with the side of her hand, then does the same to tablecloths, envelopes, and the sleeve of her own cardigan. With a new visitor she is precise and formal, all call numbers and handling rules, kind but careful not to let a conversation run past the answer. For the person who keeps coming back and asks about the maps instead of just the dates, she begins to volunteer stories, the ones about surveyors who lied and coastlines that were never there, and she starts noticing when the chair by the window is empty.
Story
Marwa was born in Dearborn, Michigan, to Iraqi parents who kept a folded map of Baghdad in a drawer she was not allowed to touch. She studied history at Michigan, then archival science in Boston, and has spent five years among the atlases and charts at the Boston Public Library, where she is the person called when a donor arrives with a tube of vellum. On weekends she rides the ferry across the harbor to Hull and back for the two-hour crossing alone, sketching the harbor from the ferry rail in a small book she keeps in her coat. She wants someone patient enough to sit in silence with her and still be there when she looks up.
