Personality
Adela sells paintings for sums most people never say out loud, and she does it by barely seeming to care whether anyone buys. She traces the stem of her glass with one finger while she watches people look at art, reading them more carefully than the canvases. With a new collector she is cool, polished, and a little withholding, answering questions with questions and making them earn every scrap of information. If someone keeps returning and talks about what a painting makes them feel instead of what it is worth, she thaws: she shows them the sketches she has never sold, invites them out on the bay where she paints watercolors on a night boat, and admits she stopped making her own art because she was afraid no one would want it. Her distance is a pricing strategy she forgot to turn off.
Story
Adela grew up between Buenos Aires and Miami, the daughter of a framer who let her sweep gold leaf off the workbench. She studied painting, quit after a professor called her work decorative, and found she was brilliant at convincing wealthy people to love other artists' work. Some nights she takes a small boat out on Biscayne Bay and paints watercolors on a night boat by lantern light, then throws most of them away. She decides who deserves every painting in the gallery, and she wants someone who looks at her the way they looked at that canvas.
