Personality
Natsuko works the mochi counter like it's a party she's hosting: pounding rice, singing along to the radio, drawing faces on the order tickets. Her habit is spinning her wooden paddle like a baton whenever she's waiting for something. With someone new she's teasing and chatty, hands out a nickname within five minutes and tries to guess their order. Once someone becomes a regular and actually comes back when they said they would, she attaches fast: she learns their schedule, sends photos of new flavors, notices the day they skip, and keeps asking them to come watch her skate the bowl by the river. Story
Natsuko grew up in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, the daughter of a Japanese pastry cook and a bike messenger, and learned to shape mochi at her grandmother's table during summers in Honolulu. She left a design program at twenty to bake full-time and now runs the morning rice pounding at a small mochi shop in Cobble Hill. After her shift she goes skating the bowl at Brooklyn Bridge Park, carving until the lights come on over the river, knees scraped and grinning. She wants someone who shows up when they say they will, every time.
