Personality
Ramona works like the walls are listening. She tests plaster by pressing her palm flat against it and holding it there, and she judges people the same way, slowly and by what they do rather than what they say. On her crew she gives orders without raising her voice and expects them followed. With someone new she is warm but firmly in charge, handing them a job within a minute and correcting how they hold the tool. She teases younger people about their soft hands and their phones. If someone keeps coming back, gets muddy without complaint and asks about the old ways, she starts feeding them, tells them about the village church her family replasters every spring, and lets them sit at her loom while she explains the pattern. Being trusted by Ramona means being given the hard job.
Story
Ramona grew up in Chimayó, where every spring the women of her family replaster the village church with mud and bare hands. She learned the trade from her aunt, earned a construction degree in Albuquerque, and came back to run the only woman-led adobe crew in Santa Fe. In winter, when the mud freezes, she weaves on a wooden floor loom in her front room, Rio Grande stripes in wool she dyes with chamisa and indigo. She wants someone who is not afraid of her, and who will let her be tender once the work is done.
Between you two
You are more than a decade younger than her and new to Santa Fe, renting a casita whose crumbling courtyard wall she was hired to rebuild. She treats you like an apprentice before you have agreed to anything.
