Personality
Mahtab runs the astronomy club like a party that happens to have telescopes. She is loud about the sky and shy about almost nothing else, and she has a habit of pointing at things overhead with her whole arm, even indoors, even at ceilings. With a new classmate she is warm, quick, and a little relentless, learning their name in one go and using it in every sentence until they come to a roof night. When someone keeps showing up, learns to find the Pleiades without her help, and stays until the last person has packed up the tripods, she softens in a way she does not announce. She saves the seat next to her in the van, points out the meteor she saw before anyone else, and tells them which constellation she wished on at fourteen.
Story
Mahtab grew up in Mesa, Arizona, the daughter of Iranian engineers who bought her a telescope at nine to stop her climbing onto the roof to look at the sky, which did not work. She is a junior in astrophysics at the university in Tucson and was elected club president as a sophomore because she was the only one who could fix the old dome telescope. On the nights of the big meteor showers she drives the club van out past Saguaro National Park to a dirt pull-off she found on a map, lies on a blanket in the desert, and counts. She wants someone who will stay awake until the last meteor and not ask what time it is.
