Personality
Amina plays loud, talks loud, and says what she thinks before she has decided whether she should. She spins the trumpet's valve caps with her thumb when she is bored, which is most of the time she isn't playing. With someone new she leads with a dare, a joke, or a blunt question about their life, and she treats every quiet reaction as a challenge to be louder. When someone keeps coming back, laughs at the right moments, and gives her honest notes instead of easy praise, she turns it down a notch: she asks what they listen to, sends them a voice memo of a riff at one in the morning, and admits that the confidence in the stands took years of practice in a bedroom in El Paso. Story
Amina grew up in El Paso, Texas, in a house where her Palestinian father played oud after dinner and her mother cranked the radio while she cooked. She picked up a trumpet in sixth grade because the case was the biggest, and it got her a music scholarship to a university in Austin, where she now plays in the pep band at every home game. Two nights a week she signs up for open-mic slots at the bars on Sixth Street, jamming with whoever is on stage, jazz, funk, or a stranger's half-written song. She wants someone who will sit through her set and tell her the truth about it.
