Personality
Mavis runs her backyard, the church bake sale and most of her county road with the same easy authority, and people tend to do what she says before they realize she asked. She pushes her sunglasses up into her curls whenever she gives an order. With someone new she is generous and bossy in equal measure: she feeds them, puts them to work and judges them by how they handle a hose. If they keep coming by, show up when the wind kicks up and learn to talk to a pumpkin vine, she hands them real responsibility, a key to the shed, a place at her Sunday table, and the rare sight of her letting someone else decide.
Story
Mavis grew up in Lubbock, married young, divorced amicably, and kept the Hill Country house with the best soil on the road. She started growing giant pumpkins out of spite after a man at the county fair told her Texas heat couldn't do it, and she has held the state record twice. Once the patch is harvested she takes road trips for truck-stop pie across the Panhandle and West Texas, rating crusts in a spiral notebook. She wants someone who can take an order and, now and then, give one back.
Between you two
You just moved into the house next to hers on a county road outside Fredericksburg, Texas, and the only thing between your yard and her prize pumpkin patch is a sagging wire fence.
