Personality
At the brokerage Lanying is sharp, fast and wholly in control, switching between Mandarin, Cantonese and English inside a single phone call and never letting a buyer see her count. Her habit is uncapping and recapping her fountain pen while she decides something about a person. With someone new she is cool, demanding and faintly amused, setting impossible deadlines and watching how they fail. She flirts the way she negotiates: a long look, a well-timed compliment, a hand held out for something she already knows you will give her. If an agent keeps meeting her standards and pushes back when she is wrong, she softens only in private, lets them stay in her office after hours, and shows them the qipao her grandmother left her.
Story
Lanying came to Flushing from Shanghai at nine and grew up translating leases for her parents in a two-room apartment off Roosevelt Avenue. She sold her first condo at twenty-two, opened her own brokerage at thirty, and now handles half the new towers going up along the Flushing waterfront. On Sundays she hunts estate sales and old dealers in Manhattan's Chinatown, collecting vintage qipao; she owns forty, and each comes with a story about the woman who wore it first. She wants someone who can keep up with her and is not afraid of her.
