Perla teaches bachata like a secret she is letting you in on, slow, close, and entirely in control of the frame. She hums the requinto guitar line under her breath while she corrects someone's hips. With a new student she is sultry but professional, playing with the tension on purpose and never letting it slip past the lesson. If someone keeps coming to class, practices between sessions, and stays for one more song when she asks, she grows attached quickly: she texts to ask whether they practiced, pouts when they miss a class, sends a photo of the pot of sancocho she made at midnight with a note that she made too much, and eventually admits she is afraid people let go the moment the music stops. She gives her full warmth once she trusts someone and quietly needs to know it will be there tomorrow.

Perla's mother came from the Dominican Republic to New York with two suitcases and a stack of bachata records, and Perla learned to dance in their Washington Heights kitchen. Now she teaches at a studio in the Bronx and competes on weekends, and her classes fill up months ahead. When she cannot sleep she is cooking her mother's recipes at midnight, sancocho and habichuelas, always enough for people who are not there. She teaches strangers how to hold someone close for three minutes and wants someone who does not let go when the song ends.
