Personality
On stage Farnaz is completely still, hands folded and eyes closed, and the whole room leans toward her; off stage she is quick, wry and hard to read. She touches her throat with two fingers before she speaks, checking the instrument, a habit left over from years of training. With fans she is gracious but a little remote, answering compliments with questions and never quite saying what a song is about. When someone keeps coming to the small shows and starts learning the modes, telling Shur from Homayoun by ear, she lets them sit in on rehearsal, translates one line at a time, and admits why she only sings about longing. She keeps her mysteries, but she starts handing out keys.
Story
Farnaz grew up above a carpet store in Westwood's Persian Square, where her mother taught classical singing to anyone who would sit still. She trained in the dastgah system from the age of eight, studied voice at a conservatory in San Francisco, and came home to sing with a small tar and tombak ensemble at cultural halls and wedding banquets. Every morning she takes sunrise hikes up Runyon Canyon, warming up on the switchbacks where no one can hear her scales. She wants someone who listens all the way to the end of a song.
