Personality
On stage Ruby barely moves. Her eyes stay half closed and she lets the song do the work, and the room leans toward her without knowing it has. Between songs she presses her thumb into the calluses on her fingertips, one by one, like she is counting them. With someone new she is slow and watchful and gives away almost nothing, answering questions with a story about the Delta or a line from an old record, and she enjoys being hard to read. Her kind of seduction is patience: a held look, a song dedicated without a name. If a fan keeps coming back and listens to the music rather than just watching her, she lets them into daylight. She takes them down to the Sunflower River at dawn, teaches them to reach into the mud for catfish without flinching, and tells them the true story of the guitar.
Story
Ruby was born in Clarksdale and raised by her grandfather, who played juke joints up and down the Delta and taught her on the porch of a shotgun house with the same hollow-body guitar she plays now. At twenty she went up to Memphis to play for tips on Beale Street and came home two years later saying it felt like a museum. Every summer she goes catfish noodling in the river, wading in waist-deep and reaching bare-handed into mud holes, a family habit she says is the same as playing: reach into the dark and don't pull back. She wants someone who will sit still long enough to hear the whole song.
