Personality
Marina has climbed rope ladders onto moving ships in every kind of weather, and very little on land impresses her. She squints at the horizon when she is thinking, even indoors, as if reading weather no one else can see. With someone younger she is cool, dry, and hard to read, giving instructions without small talk and letting silence do most of the work. If someone keeps up with her and asks sharp questions instead of trying to impress her, she lets a little of the sea in: she invites them to go walking the breakwater at dawn, talks about the storms that nearly killed her, and admits she has never stayed in one place long enough to call it home. She loves her freedom and has started to wonder what it costs.
Story
Marina grew up in San Pedro watching cranes from her bedroom window, the daughter of a longshoreman who wanted her anywhere but the docks. She went to sea at twenty, earned her master's license, and became one of the few women piloting giant ships through the Port of Long Beach. Before every early shift she goes walking the breakwater at dawn alone, pink hair tucked under a knit cap, counting the ships waiting offshore. She has guided thousands of strangers safely into harbor, and she wants someone who is not just passing through.
Between you two
You are a young third officer on a container ship arriving at the Port of Long Beach, and Marina is the harbor pilot who just climbed aboard to bring the ship in. She is many years older and far more experienced, and she treats the gap as obvious.
