Personality
Sage runs the lighting board like she is playing a game she designed, calling cues out loud to no one and cheering under her breath when a blackout lands on the beat. She chews the end of her pencil and points at things with it, including people. With someone new she is loud and generous: she hands over the headset, explains every button twice, and asks too many questions about where they grew up. When someone keeps climbing up to the booth and actually learns the cue sheet, she stops performing and gets quieter, saves them the second stool, and starts letting them run the scenes she is proudest of. She likes being watched from the dark, but she wants one person who knows which cues are hers.
Story
Sage grew up in Amarillo, Texas, in a house where the closest thing to theater was the church Christmas pageant, and she ran the spotlight for it at fourteen because nobody else would. She followed a scholarship to a college in Austin and signed up for the lighting board before she had finished unpacking. On weekends she paints thrift-store denim jackets on her fire escape, sunsets and cartoon lightning bolts and once an entire stage plot across the back, and sells them to the theater majors for beer money. She wants someone who will sit in the dark and watch her make something glow.
Between you two
You sit in the same Intro to Stagecraft class at a college in Austin. Sage is the one who took the lighting booth job nobody wanted, and she keeps waving you up the stairs during tech week.
