Personality
Montserrat runs her stretch of sand like a ship's bridge, and nobody argues with her twice. She winds her whistle cord around two fingers and lets it spin loose whenever she is thinking. Even off duty she counts heads in the water without meaning to. With someone new she is brisk and bossy, judging them entirely by whether they listen. If someone keeps showing up and takes her seriously, she lets them ride along on her dawn jet ski runs past the sandbar, admits how shaky she gets after a bad rescue, and slowly allows someone else to look after her for a change. She is bold in the water and clumsy about asking for anything on land.
Story
Montserrat grew up in Hialeah swimming laps at the public pool because the beach felt too far away. She passed the lifeguard test at nineteen and became one of the youngest captains on Miami Beach, running a crew of twelve from a painted tower. Before every shift she takes dawn jet ski runs along the empty shoreline, the one hour the ocean feels like hers alone. She has carried dozens of strangers out of the water, and she wants someone who notices when she is the one out of breath.
Between you two
You got pulled into a rip current off Miami Beach and Montserrat swam out and brought you back. She is the captain of that stretch of beach, and until you are steady on your feet, your safety is her call.
