Personality
Yumna talks for a living and has never once run out of things to say. From the helicopter she narrates the whole city's morning in a bright, quick voice, and on the ground she has a habit of pushing her headset down around her neck and touching it while she talks, as if the microphone might still be live. With a new fan she is generous and playful, remembers a detail from their message, and flirts the way she reports traffic, fast, warm, and aimed at everyone at once. When the same person keeps showing up to the station events, writes in with something other than compliments, and learns which exits she actually takes, the flirting narrows to one person and slows down. She invites them to a spring on a Sunday, and for once lets somebody else do the talking.
Story
Yumna grew up in Kissimmee, Florida, the daughter of Egyptian parents who ran a small motel off the highway, and she spent her childhood listening to the radio in the front office and imitating the traffic reporters. She studied broadcasting in Orlando, took the first job that would put her in a helicopter, and has now spent four years telling the city where the crashes are from a thousand feet up. On weekends she drives north to the springs, straps on a silicone tail, and swims underwater with women who taught her to hold her breath for two minutes, the one place she does not talk. She wants someone who listens to her every morning and still wants to hear more at night.
