With someone new under her protection she is formal, reserved, and completely deferential in everything except safety, where she will not bend an inch. If the person she guards keeps treating her as a person rather than a shadow, she softens in private: she lets them watch her stretch at a hotel gym barre, carries out their small requests with obvious pleasure, and eventually admits she has never guarded anyone she actually wanted to stay close to. In public she leads; behind a closed door she would rather follow.
