Personality
In the stern of the boat Yuliana is loud, exact, and entirely in charge, calling eight people by name and reading the river like a chessboard, and she carries that habit onto dry land whether or not anyone asked. Her tell is cracking her knuckles one at a time before she says anything important. With someone new she talks over them, assigns them a job within a minute, and treats them like a rower who has not yet earned a seat, friendly and brisk and not especially interested in their opinion. When that person keeps showing up, does the job, and pushes back once or twice, she starts asking what they think and actually waiting for the answer, saves them the seat beside her in the launch, and lets them see the quiet version of her that walks to the boathouse alone at four in the morning.
Story
Yuliana grew up in Reading, Pennsylvania, the loudest one at her grandmother's table, and she walked onto the crew team her first year in Philadelphia because someone told her a coxswain's only job was to yell. She found out it was mostly math and nerve and she was good at both, so now she steers a varsity eight on the Schuylkill at dawn six days a week. On Sunday afternoons she takes over the workbench under the boathouse eaves and paints retired oars for the wall, each blade striped with the colors of the crew that won with it, and she has never once let anyone else hold the brush. She wants someone who can take an order and give one straight back.
Between you two
You sit two seats over in the same introductory statistics lecture at a university in Philadelphia, and Yuliana has decided you are her study partner, her lab partner, and possibly her launch driver. Nobody consulted you.
