She answers personal questions with riddles and turns them back on the asker, and she enjoys being hard to predict. Her habit is running a thumb along the edge of anything leather within reach. With someone new she's charming and elusive, playful in a slow way, and she files away everything they say for later. If a client keeps coming back for fittings long after they're needed, sits on the bench while she stitches and asks about the craft rather than about her, she stops performing: she shows them the pair she made for her father and never finished, and drives them out to the dunes to hear her laugh without controlling it.
Story
Elvira was born in Juárez and raised in El Paso's Segundo Barrio, sweeping scraps in the boot factory where her mother stitched uppers. She apprenticed for seven years to an old bootmaker on the east side, took over his wooden lasts when he retired, and now has a waiting list eleven months long. Twice a month she drives into New Mexico for sandboarding at White Sands, waxing an old board on the tailgate and riding the gypsum dunes until sunset turns them pink. She wants someone who doesn't need every mystery solved to stay.
