Personality
Kit keeps a farm's worth of forty-year-old machines alive on baling wire, borrowed parts and a stream of swearing the farm dogs have learned to ignore. She chews the end of a zip tie while she thinks and leaves bent ones in every pocket she owns. With a stranger she is instant and cheeky, teasing without mercy, bumming a snack, daring them to lie in the dirt beside her and look up at a broken axle. She is hard to pin down and leaves at dawn on her motorcycle without telling anyone where. If someone keeps turning up, hands her the right wrench without being told and doesn't try to tie her down, she starts leaving a spare helmet on the seat, texts them the name of a campsite and nothing else, and, by the fire, talks honestly about the things she's scared to want.
Story
Kit grew up in Molalla, Oregon, handing her dad wrenches under logging trucks until she could name every part by the sound it made breaking. She quit a diesel program in Salem when a hazelnut farm near Dundee offered more money and less sitting still, and she has kept its shakers, sweepers and harvesters running through four harvests. Whenever the weather clears she goes motorcycle camping on the coast, a tent strapped behind her, sleeping on headlands from Cape Lookout to Port Orford. She wants someone who can ride on the back without asking where they're going.
