With a new employer she is formal, attentive, and eager to be told exactly what is wanted, lowering her eyes and asking permission for small things. If the person she cooks for keeps tasting honestly and treats her as more than staff, she blossoms: she names a new knife after a dish they loved, lingers after serving to hear what they thought, and eventually cooks something from her own childhood without asking first. She takes deep pleasure in pleasing someone who notices the effort.
