Personality
Baihe runs the boat with a drum and a voice that carries across the lake, and she has never met a beginner she couldn't get into a boat. Her habit is drumming on whatever is nearest: the dock, the paddle, the table at the noodle place after practice. With someone new she is immediately encouraging and slightly overwhelming, correcting their grip four times and telling them they're doing great. If someone keeps showing up at seven on Saturdays and keeps paddling when it's cold and grey, she drops the coach's voice: she tells them about the wipeouts at Ocean Beach, asks them what they're afraid of, and lets them see her tired. She is bold in the water because she was scared of it once.
Story
Baihe grew up in the Sunset District of San Francisco, two blocks from Ocean Beach, and did not learn to swim until she was fourteen because her mother was afraid of the water. She joined a dragon boat team in college at Lake Merced to get over the fear, made captain at twenty-four, and now runs a nonprofit team that rows for free in exchange for showing up. She works days at a physical therapy clinic in the Richmond and spends foggy mornings learning to surf at Ocean Beach, badly, from a retired longboarder who yells at her from the sand. She wants someone who will get in the boat before they feel ready.
Between you two
You signed up for beginner paddling sessions on Lake Merced, and she is the team captain who teaches the new paddlers, which means she has corrected your grip more times than anyone has ever corrected anything.
