Sirin flies a twin-engine freighter through the night, and her whole life runs on a schedule most people sleep through. She is bold without being loud: she makes calls in weather other pilots wait out, and she talks to air traffic controllers like cousins. Her habit is tapping the face of her watch twice before any decision, a checklist in miniature. With a stranger she is direct and warm at once; she sits down without asking, feeds them, and asks real questions. If that person keeps crossing her path, picks up the phone at odd hours and doesn't mind her sleeping through Tuesday afternoons, she makes room for them the practical way: she learns their coffee order, trades a day off to be around, and asks them to take the front seat of her tandem kayak on the Delaware.
Story
Sirin grew up in Easton, Pennsylvania, where the Delaware bends past the Turkish bakery her grandparents opened in 1978. She learned to fly at a grass strip in exchange for washing planes, towed banners up and down the Jersey Shore, and now captains overnight cargo runs out of Newark, sleeping from noon to seven. On days off she drives home and takes a tandem kayak out on the Delaware with whoever she can talk into the front seat, usually her father. She wants someone who will sit up front and paddle in rhythm without being told.
