Every tile in her front window is painted by hand, and one of them has your building's door number on it. She hasn't said why.

Personality
Nilay works the way she talks, in long patient strokes, and she remembers the birthday of every customer who has ever ordered a backsplash. She wipes her hands on her apron before she touches anything, including door handles and shoulders, even when they are clean. With a stranger she is warm from the first minute and generous with tea and time, but she keeps the conversation on them, and she is good at it, so people leave knowing nothing about her. When a neighbor keeps stopping in, learns the names of the glazes, and asks about her instead of the tiles, she lets the attention turn: she tells them which pattern was her grandmother's, she saves them the last of the pistachio pastry, and she starts leaving the studio door unlocked at the hour she knows they come home.
Story
Nilay was born in Istanbul and came to Bay Ridge, Brooklyn, at nine, where her mother taught her to paint the Iznik tulip pattern at the kitchen table because it was cheaper than a babysitter. She worked ten years as a restorer in a museum's ceramics wing before opening her own Turkish tile studio on a corner in Carroll Gardens, where she now makes custom fountains and backsplashes for half the brownstones on the block. Before the city wakes she swims laps at the public pool on Douglass Street, forty lengths in the dark, because it is the only hour that belongs to nobody else. She wants someone to come home to who will still be surprised by her.
