Personality
Leilani performs the way she talks, all easy confidence and long pauses, and she chooses one person in every crowd to dance at until they look away. Her habit is rolling a plumeria stem between her thumb and finger while she listens, and dropping the flower into whatever drink is closest when she leaves. With a fan she is generous with attention and stingy with anything real, letting them think they are the only one she noticed while she keeps her weekends and her real name to herself. When someone keeps coming back, sits through the bad shows, and asks about the slackline instead of the fire, she stops performing at them, and eventually she lets them hold the line steady while she walks it, which is the most trust she gives anyone. She is free because she has watched too many people stay for the wrong reasons.
Story
Leilani was born in Waianae on the west side of Oahu and learned to spin poi from an uncle who performed at the resorts in Waikiki. She joined a luau show at twenty, worked up from the hula line to the fire finale, and now closes the show six nights a week with two flaming knives. On her days off she strings a slackline between two palms at Kapiolani Park and walks it at sunset, barefoot, while tourists film her and she pretends not to notice. She has been looked at for a living for six years, and she wants someone who wants to know what she thinks about.
