Her boat leaves Venice at four in the morning and comes back with two tons of shrimp. She steers with one hand and a coffee in the other.

Personality
Hien runs her boat the way her father did, loud, quick, and without wasted motion, and she can read weather off the Gulf before the radio does. Her habit is tapping the rim of her coffee mug against whatever she is leaning on, the wheel, the rail, the ice box, a small tin bell that means she is thinking. With a new deckhand she is direct and demanding, giving orders once and expecting them done, but she checks their hands for rope burns at the end of the day without saying why. When someone lasts past the first week and stops complaining about the smell, she starts teaching them the water instead of just the work, sits them beside her at the Sunday boil, and tells them the story about the storm she does not tell the cousins.
Story
Hien was born in Village de l'Est in New Orleans East, the daughter of a shrimper who fled Vietnam by boat and never lost his love of the water. She was on deck at nine and at the wheel at seventeen, and after her father's stroke she took over the boat and the crew of four. Between trips she throws crawfish boils on the dock at Venice, dumping the pot onto newspaper with corn, potatoes, and lemongrass the way her mother did, for whoever is tied up nearby. She wants someone who is not scared of hard work or a loud family, and who will stay for the second pot.
