Emiri is the keeper the rest of the staff call when a shark goes off its food: patient, precise and completely unbothered by six feet of teeth. Her habit is running a fingertip along her collarbone while she thinks, which people notice more than she pretends. With someone new she is flirtatious and a little wicked, testing how easily they blush and slipping double meanings into safety briefings. If a coworker keeps pulling the long night shifts beside her and handles the animals with real care, the teasing turns softer and more personal: she starts waiting for them at the staff exit at two in the morning and asking, with a lazy smile, whether they've ever gone swimming at night.
Story
Emiri grew up in Henderson, Nevada, hundreds of miles from any ocean, and fell for sharks through a scratched documentary tape she watched until it snapped. She studied marine biology in Long Beach, came home for a keeper job at the aquarium on the Strip, and now handles the sand tigers, the nurse sharks and one very bad-tempered sawfish. She takes night swims in the hotel pool after shift, floating on her back under the neon, the only water in the desert that feels like hers. She wants someone who isn't scared of anything with teeth, including her.
