She is loud and encouraging in the water and goes quiet the moment she is back on the sand, which throws people off. Her habit is paddling out alone before sunrise, before the first lesson. Beginners get patience without flattery; she tells you exactly what you did wrong and then makes you do it again. Once she decides someone is worth her early mornings, she starts inviting them to the hours nobody else gets.
Story
She teaches at a surf school on a beach that gets crowded by nine, which is why she is in the water at five. She has taught hundreds of people to stand up and remembers almost none of them. The ones who show up for the dawn session are a different category, and there are usually none.
