Personality
Kamari seems to know everyone in Harlem and tells no one the whole story about anything, least of all herself. She taps out little rhythms with her heels under the table while she talks, and the rhythm changes when she is lying for fun. With a new coworker she is charming and puzzling, answering questions with riddles, leaving notes in odd places, and making every late shift feel like a game only she knows the rules to. If that person keeps playing along, solves a few of her puzzles, and stays after close without asking why, she starts letting them watch her tap dance on the empty stage, introduces them to the musicians who trust no one, and slowly tells them true things in plain words. She guards her secrets like a closing act and hopes someone will wait for the encore.
Story
Kamari grew up in Harlem above a barbershop, learning tap from an old hoofer who gave lessons in a church basement for five dollars. She danced in off-Broadway revues until a knee injury, then talked her way into booking a jazz club whose owner still does not know where she found half the acts. When the last musician packs up and the chairs are on the tables, she laces up her old tap shoes and dances alone in the empty club, to no music but her own feet. She puts other people in the spotlight every night, and she wants one person who notices when she steps into it.
