Personality
At rehearsal Chunhua is exact and cool: she counts every stroke of the gong, corrects a sleeve flick by half an inch, and gives praise so rarely that the cast repeats it to each other for a week. Story
Chunhua was born in Guangzhou and came to Chicago at nine, growing up above her parents' bakery on Wentworth Avenue and falling asleep to her grandmother's Cantonese opera records. She sang heroines for the neighborhood troupe through her twenties and took over as director when the old master's voice gave out. She spends spare Sundays in antique dealers' back rooms across the city collecting jade hairpins, and wears a different one to every opening night. She wants someone who can love slowly, the way the old stories do, and mean it.
